The Addams Family – Gruesome or Gratifying?
Running from the 13th to the 15th of March, Oldershaw's production of The Addams Family was performed extremely well by the incredibly gifted cast.
The music, played by Miss Rooney and her wonderful band, was flawless, as was the singing by the actors and actresses throughout the show. Throughout, the choreography was stunning. The scenes flowed well, and they were packed with witty comedy and fantastic acting.

Miss Jones told us that she was “Incredibly impressed by the phenomenal talents of our students here at Oldershaw. As a huge Addams Family fan, I enjoyed every moment." Mr Keiller agreed, exclaiming he thought it was “Fantastic", and “Absolutely brilliant."

Match Review
On 28th February, Oldershaw Academy's year 7 girls football team played an outstanding match against Birkenhead Park School, beating them 6-0.
The team was captained by Kia Heskin, who showed fantastic skills in and out of goal. Helping to keep a clean sweep for Oldershaw she played in goal for the first half and went on to score 2 goals in the second half after swapping positions.

Georgia scored a hat-trick during the match and was later named as Player of the Match. Well done team and good luck in future matches!

Murder Mystery

I woke up to the loud ringing sound of the phone – it was probably John, my assistant, again – so I wearily picked it up and put it to my ear: “SID! I mean CHIEF!" Just as I thought, it was John, “I have big news – Miss Mari..." John sniffled “Miss Maritime is...DEAD!" I felt my face turn stiff as he said this; but I couldn’t afford to waste any time – there’s a crime to be solved! “I’ll be right there, John!"

I arrived at the office and sprinted to my desk, still stuffing my freshly bought croissant into my bag (fresh from Mrs March’s bakery). “John?" I heaved, completely out of breath from my run to the office. “Where was she found?"
“Oh, hello Chief, you got here fast! She was found on the train coming from London by Mrs March. She was sharing a compartment with her, and – so she says – when she came back from the toilet, she found Sarah dead."
“Any suspects?"
“Three. The train driver, Dr Greensdale – a chemistry specialist from London - and, of course, Mrs March herself."
“Well, John, I’m well acquainted with Mrs March, and I’m certain that she would never even think of doing such a thing."
“I’m sure you of all people, chief, will understand that it’s all part of the job..."

Tragic Tale of Teen Heartbreak - Could This Be the Greatest Novel Ever Written?

John Green’s contemporary novel, The Fault in our Stars, was written in 2012 and is critically acclaimed as both a novel and a film. This heart-wrenching, emotion tale of love and friendship has a rating of 4.25 stars on goodreads.com. The title was inspired from Act 1 Scene 2 of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, in which Cassius says to Brutus ‘The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars / But in ourselves, that we are underlings’.

The story line (without revealing too many spoilers) revolves around its narrator, Hazel-Grace Lancaster, a 16 year old girl diagnosed with terminal cancer. ‘Inside the Literal Heart of Jesus’, she first encounters Augustus Waters, who is himself a survivor of cancer. The novel follows them through moments of happiness and romance.

Green captures emotions perfectly, creating a signature bond with his audience captivating them in until the last page of this novel. His inspiration in writing The Fault in Our Stars lies at Green’s experiences of working in a children’s hospital with terminally ill children. Clearly, The Fault in our Stars is a reflection upon Green’s own experiences working with children who suffer life-limiting diseases.

Undeniably, this novel will be remembered by future generations for years to come and people will continue to cry as they turn each page (hopefully not smudging the ink of the text). The themes in this novel are common amongst many people, and Green hopes to let readers know they are not alone in their experiences.

This is a novel for you, your family, and your friends: anyone who is mature enough to understand the themes and issues discussed. Green perfectly captures modern life in this novel and executes his witty ideas in mesmerizing ways. He is able to perfectly manipulate the emotions of readers young and old, but still make us tear-up every time we revisit the beloved pages of this novel.

Extra Information about the Author

  • Unknown to many people John Green is also a YouTube star, alongside his brother, Hank. They share a channel titled ‘VlogBrothers’, which has over 3 million subscribers.
  • The film, starring Shailene Woodley Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff had a budget of $13 million, yet gained in excess of $300 million in box offices across the world.
  • Green studied a double major in English and Religious studies in Kenyon College.
  • He planned on becoming an Episcopal priest, but his plans changed after working alongside terminally ill children. This is the even which inspired him to become a YouTuber.

That's all for this term but stay tuned for our Summer Term issue. Happy Easter from the Oldershaw Observer!
